Are They Real Or Fake? (Lashes, That Is!)

Fake lashes reinforces the old belief that falsies are best left for Halloween, to accessorize your every day outfit. But a few fake-lash clumps applied to the outer edges of your upper lash lines really help eyes stand out in a subtle, work-appropriate way. Applying lashes can be intimidating, but once you get the hang of it, the whole process takes less than 10 minutes.

Step 1: Clean your eyes and lashes of makeup. Put a pea-size drop of eyelash glue—most store-bought lash sets come with one—on the back of your hand.

Step 2: Use the other hand to pick up a pair of tweezers. With the tweezers, gently grab one lash clump by the hairs, close to the base. (Each clump has about three hairs in it.)

Step 3: Dip the base (not the hairs) into the glue. Then with the tweezers, lift the lash up to one eye.

Step 4: Start at the outer corner of your upper lash line. Using the tweezers, nestle the glue-dipped base between your natural lashes, pressing slightly to push the base into your lash line. Release the tweezers. Add one or two more clumps along the outer edges. No more than three on each eye.

Step 5: Let the lashes dry for at least three to five minutes. Try not to look up or blink too hard; you don't want the glue to stick to your eyelid, or to dislodge the lashes.

Step 6: If you're worried about making mistakes, or nervous that the glue will show, use a jet-black liquid eyeliner along your upper lashes, thickening and winging out the line slightly at the ends. This will cover the glue and darken the lash line so any trace of application will be hidden. You can also use black glue: If any shows along your lashes, it will just look like black liner.
